Laboratory of Mechanics of Biomaterials

Head of the laboratory

Swain Michael Vincent,

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD),
Professor Emeritus, University of Sydney.

The Laboratory of Mechanics of Biocompatible Materials was created by order of the rector of the Don State Technical University of January 24, 2018 No. 11 with the support of a grant from the Government of the Russian Federation (“Megagrant”) to conduct research under the guidance of leading scientists (grant agreement dated February 5, 2018 No. 14.Z50.31.0046 ) on the topic “Biomechanics of the tissues of the oral cavity and the eyeball and optimized biocompatible materials for implantation”.

The head of the laboratory is Michael Vincent Swain, a renowned scientist in the field of materials science and biocompatible materials, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the University of Sydney.

The main direction of the laboratory for 2018-2020. – a comprehensive study of the properties of materials of human tissues, in particular tissues of the oral cavity, eyeball and organs associated with them, for the development of implants made of artificial biocompatible materials, the main properties of which are identical to the materials of living tissues.

The direction of scientific research is the biomechanics of the tissues of the oral cavity and the eyeball and optimized biocompatible materials for implantation.

The research in this direction was supported by a grant from the Government of the Russian Federation (agreement dated 05.02.2018 No. 14.Z50.31.0046). The goal of the project is a comprehensive study of the properties of materials of human tissues, in particular tissues of the oral cavity, eyeball and organs associated with them for the development of implants from artificial biocompatible materials, the main properties of which are identical to the materials of living tissues.

Project Objectives:

  • a detailed study of the microstructure of the tissues of the oral cavity and the eyeball and tissues of neighboring organs using modern technical means: an electron microscope (SEM), a focused ion beam (FIB), x-ray methods of research, and others;
  • the study of the mechanical properties of tissues of the oral cavity and the eyeball using nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy and related mathematical models;
  • development of a methodology for assessing the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of graded and hierarchical structures common to a wide class of biological and biocompatible materials;
  • creation of a database on modern biocompatible materials and organization of computer selection of these materials for implants of the oral cavity, eyeball, etc .;
  • mathematical modeling of the behavior of selected implants to determine the adequacy of the resource of artificial materials when they replace human tissues;
  • development of a methodology for the production of optimized eye and dental implants from biocompatible materials, taking into account the data of experimental studies and calculation results for developed models of consolidated media.

The project is being implemented by scientists-mechanics, mathematicians, materials scientists, medical workers, specialists in the field of information technology and mathematical modeling.
